Capitol Reef National Park

The best way to summarize Capitol Reef National Park - watch a Wile E. Coyote/Roadrunner cartoon. That is what this entire area looks like and what made it so awesome to visit. The entire scenic drive, I expected to see a trap in the road with a boulder falling from the sky in another ACME fueled failure.

The rocks, the colors, the scenic drive, the orchards (which you can pick fresh fruit from at no cost) and the wild life made this a great place to visit. The main hike I wanted to do was closed due to recent flooding, so I look forward to a return trips allowing me to get some time on foot amongst the spires and cliffs.

During the Summer Road-trip of 2022, this was our first stop after leaving Salt Lake City as we started a great tour of Utah. We took in the main scenic drive through the park followed by a hike on the Hickman Bridge trail (about 2 miles round trip) to see our first Natural Bridge of the tour. It was a good warm up hike before tackling Bryce Canyon and Zion in the next couple of days.

April 2023 Visit

During the return leg of our 2023 Wave Hike family trip, we stopped into Capitol Reef as part of the Big 5 tour to take in hike some great slot canyons, panoramic views, and probably the absolute greatest pie in the world! If you are ever in the area of Capitol Reef, you MUST swing into the bakery and pick up some pies - there's nothing better, I promise.
